Hiking Guides and Reviews

Dirt trail

I’d always enjoyed hiking as a kid, but it wasn’t until much later in life that it became the addiction it is now. These days I can’t get enough of it, and always try to get some good walks in no matter where in the world my travels take me.

There’s nothing quite like long-distance hiking to calm my mind, lift my spirits, and work my legs until they refuse to go any further… and then get up in the morning and do it all again.

Camino de Santiago

I’ve walked somewhere north of 1000 miles on the Camino de Santiago, a network of medieval European hiking trails that converge on a spectacular cathedral in northwestern Spain. These are my trail guides, packing lists, and musings on some of the best experiences of my life.

UK Long-Distance Walks

I’ve written guides and roundups for several of the walks I’ve done in the United Kingdom, plus what to pack if you’re planning to do one yourself.

  • Looking down a rough grass and dirt trail towards a field with grazing sheep, an orange beach and fields in the background.
  • Narrow dirt track raised above grass and marshes on either side, stretching off into the distance
  • A dirt path running through an extensive wheatfield on the St James' Way. Blue sky and clouds above
  • Day walk on the South Downs
  • South Downs Way, looking toward Beachy Head
  • Great view, Cotswold Way day 5
  • Hadrian's Wall Trail, day 4 views
  • Large flat stones inlaid in the ground to make up a walking path that slopes downhill towards a valley.

New Zealand Long-Distance Walks

Likewise with New Zealand, I’ve written guides to many of the day, overnight, and multi-day hikes I’ve done in my homeland, including a few of the Great Walks.

  • Looking towards a stone memorial with a lake beyond and tall mountains in the distance
  • Man walking with a backpack on a narrow path along a ridgeline
  • Dave with arms out at Lake Waikaremoana
  • View descending from Roys Peak summit
  • Lauren at Pinnacles summit
  • Mueller Hut Route view

Other Hiking Guides and Reviews

From South Korea to Ireland, Australia to the USA, these are the individual track guides and trip reports that didn’t warrant their own section, along with gear reviews.

  • View from behind of a man with hiking poles in his hands and wearing a hiking backpack covered by a pack cover, walking along a grassy trail on a hill with expansive views over surrounding countryside
  • View over steep, jagged granite peaks with forested slopes on both sides. Blue sky with some white clouds above.
  • Looking down a dirt trail in the You Yangs Regional Park, with trees either side and views out over surrounding countryside in the distance
  • Dave with pack and cows on the Camino
  • Overlooking lake in Acadia National Park
