Looking down

Just a little longer

I want to travel, but…

…my girlfriend doesn’t want to come with me…

…my family don’t understand…

…it’s a terrible economy…

…my boss promised me a raise…

…I want to go to grad school…

I am afraid

Fear is a wonderful motivator

In two weeks time I’m running 21km in a girl’s school uniform, and I’m woefully under-prepared for it. I’m scared that I’m not going to make it to the finish line.

In five weeks time I’m handing in my security pass and walking away from a cushy six figure job to try to make a location independent living. I’m scared that my hopes, plans and next year’s income will amount to pretty much nothing.

The friend that is staying with me at the moment has just moved half way across the world and is trying to set up as a location independent health writer. She is scared that she’ll run out of money, contacts or both before she even gets things off the ground.

There’s a lot of fear floating around my apartment at the moment.

And I’m very pleased about that.

This time, it’s not a convenient excuse to get away from a place that I no longer want to live, but rather a convenient excuse to take an extended holiday from a place that I have really come to love (Melbourne in general, and my neighbourhood in particular) and have every intention of returning to. I don’t know whether this difference is the reason, or whether it’s just the usual pre-travel jitters, but whatever it is I’ve been feeling the fear from the minute that I made this choice.
