The Friday Photo #58 – It’s the end of the world

Cape Reinga lighthouse

Well, perhaps not the end of the world … but at least the end of the country.

Cape Reinga, at the top of New Zealand’s North Island, isn’t quite the northernmost point of the country – but it’s pretty darn close.  The iconic lighthouse has been the backdrop for many a postcard, and the area is considered tapu (sacred) by the Maori people, who believe that the souls of the dead depart for the underworld from this spot.

It’s one beautiful end of a beautiful country.

Went there a few times, and really loved the view there. Especially the driver over 90 mile beach to get there is great :)

Went there in January, unfortunately it was lightly raining and pretty overcast, so the view wasn't as spectacular. I hope that when I get back to NZ in the new year, I can check it out on a clear day :) Love the Maori legends that go along with it, it just makes it that much more of a special place!
