The Friday Photo #52 – Hoisting the flag in DC

Iwo Jima - Hoisting the flag in DC

Towards the end of a very long, very hot day of sightseeing in the midsummer heat of Washington DC, I came across the huge Iwo Jima Memorial near Arlington Cemetery.  Well, it was kinda hard to miss.

More properly known as the Marine Corps War Memorial, this iconic statue commemorates the raising of the flag on the island of Iwo Jima, the last to be retaken from the Japanese forces by the US during World War 2.

I’m not one to celebrate war at all, but regardless it’s one hell of an impressive piece of art.
