Taking the scenic route in New Zealand isn’t difficult. Most of them are. State Highway 83 between Omarama and Oamaru is a prime example, passing two large lakes and wending up and down through pretty hills the whole way.
Despite the sunny skies, a heavy mist had hovered over Lake Benmore all morning – but it was burning off quickly. Pulling off the road and jumping a fence, we just had time to snap a few photos before it disappeared completely. When we first arrived, I could barely see the top of the hills peeking through.
Ten minutes later, all was different.
