I’m doing it in a dress. Are you?

On Sunday October 9 I’m going to be running in the Melbourne half-marathon.

In a school uniform.

A girl’s school uniform.

Yup, that’s right.  I’m doing it in a dress.

Hundreds of other people around the world will also be wearing school dresses in the first weeks of October, embarrassing themselves in the name of a good cause and raising money for One Girl to help educate girls in Sierra Leone.

Will you be one of them?

If you’re a girl in Sierra Leone, the odds are stacked against you.  From the OneGirl website:

You’ll only have a 1 in 6 chance of attending high school. There’s a 62% chance you’ll be married before your 18th birthday, and if you’re really unlucky you might get married as young as 11.

There’s a 50% chance you’ll be sexually abused before you turn 18 and it’s almost guaranteed that you’ll experience some kind of sexual violence in your lifetime. Not only that, but there’s a 1 in 8 chance you’ll die during childbirth as well.

But it doesn’t have to look like this. For just $20 a month, you can provide a full education scholarship for a girl in Sierra Leone. When a girl is educated, she’ll change the world.

Twenty bucks a month.

That’s it.

I’ve had breakfasts that cost more than that.

It’s a round of beers at the pub.

You can spend more than that on coffee in a week.

FacebookProfileMenSo instead of spending money on those things, why not donate a few bucks to improving the lives of girls and their communities in Africa?

When you’ve done that, help spread the word.  Tell your friends and family about it.  Mention it on Facebook, Twitter and Google+.  Get a t-shirt printed.  Hire a sky writer.  Whatever.  Just get the message out there.

The more people that hear about the campaign, the more girls will get an education in Sierra Leone in the coming years.  It’s as simple as that.

Or why not go one better and do it in a dress yourself?  Sign up to do something suitably fun and crazy in a girl’s school uniform in October and raise money yourself.  If you can’t think of something to do, ask your friends to suggest a few options – I’m sure they won’t have any problems coming up with embarrassing ideas.

I’m also putting the challenge out there to some of the incredible people I’ve met in the last couple of years to get involved.

To everyone who was at the World Domination Summit

Get on board.  This whole idea started at the after-party as that weekend of awesome in Portland wound down, when Chantelle from OneGirl managed to convince me to run a half marathon in a school uniform.  Sign up to wear a dress in October yourself, and use the incredible power of your networks to take this campaign around the world.

To all of my fellow travel bloggers

I’m asking you to do your bit too.  I want to see you in a school dress (well, in some cases I probably don’t, but that’s beside the point.)  Start raising money, blog about it, use your social media influence for good.  We talk a lot about changing the world.  Let’s put our money and our pride where our mouths are.

And to you.

Whoever and wherever you are, I’m putting the challenge out to you as well.  Donate – or do it in a dress yourself – and change a young girl’s life.

Just to make it more interesting, for each of you that signs up to Do It In A Dress and raises enough to put at least one girl through school for a year, I’ll donate an extra ten bucks.  This could cost me a small fortune, but it’s worth it.  Just send me a message letting me know when you get there.

60 million girls around the world are not in school.

Are you doing something about it?

  • Alright Dave. I can’t have an Aussie looking so good in a dress. I will do it in a dress too, although I can’t promise I’d wear it while cycling in Africa. I think visiting Sierra Leone would be even better!

  • Nice legs, buddy! You’re awesome. 😉

    • Hehe – thanks! I keep being asked if I’m going to shave them. Perhaps for a suitable donation hey?
