The Friday Photo #85 – A lot of hot air in Chiang Mai

Balloons in Chiang Mai

As part of my recent horrible tradition of getting nowhere near enough sleep and leaving the house before dawn, on Saturday I headed out to the Thailand International Balloon Festival with my friends Daniel and Dustin.

Despite a distinct lack of coffee the roaring burners and excited chatter of the growing crowd somehow kept me wide awake.  The balloonists quickly assembled their equipment, filled their balloons and quietly rose into the rapidly-brightening sky and drifted off to the south.  Within an hour it was all over … at least until they did it all again later in the day.

I didn’t see the afternoon version, however.  I might just have been having a well deserved nap.

It's amazing what we miss because we slee through sunrise - the colours of the sky look beautiful.

Cool photo Dave. And yes, getting up so early is marred by the lack of coffee, but more than compensated for by the colours!

Lovely! You should also try to attend the Hot Air Balloon Festival in Clark, Pampanga here in the Philippines on February :D

I finally got to go on a Hot Air Balloon this year for the first time. It was very cool.

Looks really fun! I did a hot air balloon ride in Luxor and it was the highlight of my trip.
