The Friday Photo #43 – Big pussy cats

Cheetah

I’ve been fortunate enough to see quite a few big cats in the wild over the years.  From entire prides of lion stalking the end of the wildebeest migration in Kenya to a remarkably close encounter with a leopard in the dead of night in South Africa, the excitement of being able to see these amazing predators in their natural environment is always tempered with the thrill of fear knowing that you could easily be lunch if they so desired.

Not so with cheetah, however.  They are much smaller than their man-eating brethren, and a lot friendlier besides.  Watching them hunt is no less of an incredible experience, mind you, with the the contrast between the stealthy tracking of an intended victim and the explosive burst of speed as these amazing cats burst from a standing start to over 100km/h.

The poor baby impala that these two set their sights on didn’t stand a chance.
